Shalu (also: Zhalu; Tib . : zha lu ) is one of the most famous monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism, located in the village of Shalu in the Samzhubzê district in the district-free city of Xigazê in the Tibet Autonomous Region in the People's Republic of China . It is about 4,000 meters above sea level.

history

Shalu Monastery was founded in 1040 by Cetsün Sherab Chungne (Tib .: lce btsun shes rab 'byung gnas ). In 1314 the 11th abbot of Shalu, Butön Rinchen Drub , founded the Shalu Riphug monastery (Tib .: zha lu ri phug ). Buton was in Throphu Kagyu -Schule (Tib .: khro phu bka 'brgyud been trained), but he was particularly interested in the mandalas of Yoga Tantra and for the Kalachakra Tantra. Eventually he founded his own Shalu tradition , which had an impact after his death.

In 1333 the monastery was rebuilt and expanded. The rulers of the Ming Dynasty (1388–1644) placed Shalu under their patronage, which is why u. a. the main temple of the monastery has a Chinese style roof. The combination of Tibetan and Chinese elements is an architectural feature of Shalu. Shalu is also famous for its wall paintings.

A well-known teacher of Shalu in the 19th century was Losel Tenkyong (tib .: blo gsal bstan skyong ) who, in connection with Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo (tib .: 'jam dbyangs mkhyen brtse'i dbang po ), made an important contribution to the rime movement (Tib .: ris med ) performed.

In the years 1960–1970, the monastery, which had benefited for centuries from the harmony between the Chinese imperial court and Tibetan Buddhism, was completely destroyed by the Chinese except for the main temple.

The monastery has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China since 1988 .
