Tiguentourine gas system
The Tiguentourine gas plant is located in the third largest contiguous gas field in Algeria .
The gas fields
The natural gas fields are located in the Illizi province in eastern Algeria. About 40 km to the east is the town of In Aménas . Around 18 percent of the Algerian gas exported comes from the Tiguentourine gas plant operated there by BP , Statoil and CEPSA in cooperation with the Algerian state-owned company Sonatrach since 2006 . The total investment was 1.5 billion euros.
The daily output from the four gas fields connected to the plant is around 75 million cubic meters of natural gas and is exported to Western Europe via the TransMed natural gas route established between 1978 and 1983 . The gas is transported via the pipeline to Hassi R'Mel . There the route forks and leads to the Algerian ( Béthioua ) and Tunisian ( El Haouaria ) ports and from there to Spain and Italy.
The infrastructure of the gas system includes accommodation for the workers and a security camp in a locked area. In addition to around 650 Algerians, 41 foreign people from 15 nations lived there when In Aménas was taken hostage on January 16, 2013 . As reported by the Italian gas company Snam , the amount of natural gas supplied fell by 17%.
