Natal Province

Natal (stressed on the second syllable) is a former South African province that existed from 1910 to 1994. The province was in the east of South Africa. Their capital was Pietermaritzburg , but the largest city was Durban with a major port nationwide . In 1994 the province was united with the homeland KwaZulu , which had existed until then, to form the new province of KwaZulu-Natal .

Natal 1910

The name is translated as "Christmas Land" because it was discovered by Vasco da Gama on Christmas Day, the "dies natalis", in 1497 . It is part of the three-part stepland between the southern Drakensberg and the Indian Ocean . The country is rainy and contains rivers that are rich in water, but not navigable, but there are numerous dams for irrigation purposes.

Due to the abundance of rain, the area has a subtropical climate. The main crops in clearings in the laurel forest are sugar cane , tea and bananas . On higher grasslands, arable land and pastureland with cattle, sheep and goat breeding can be found.

history

In 1910, the British colony of Natal became one of its four provinces as part of the establishment of the South African Union . At the head of the Natal Province was an administrator . In the course of the redesign of the South African administrative structure after the end of apartheid , the union of Natal with the homeland KwaZulu in 1994 resulted in the formation of today's province of KwaZulu-Natal .
