Nathaniel Peabody

Nathaniel Peabody (born March 1, 1741 in Topsfield , Essex County , Province of Massachusetts Bay , †  June 27, 1823 in Exeter , New Hampshire ) was an American politician . In 1779 and 1780 he was a delegate for New Hampshire to the Continental Congress .

Career

Nathaniel Peabody attended public schools in his home country and then studied medicine. In 1761 he moved to New Hampshire where he practiced as a doctor. In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. In January 1776 he became a member and chairman of the security committee of his homeland. Between 1776 and 1796 he sat several times in the New Hampshire House of Representatives . In 1793 he was president of this chamber. From 1785 to 1793 he was also a member of the State Senate three times . In 1777 he was appointed adjutant general commander of the state militia. In 1779 he commanded a unit in Rhode Island during the Revolutionary War . In the New Hampshire Militia, he reached the rank of major general, which he held between 1793 and 1798.

In 1779 and 1780 Peabody represented his state in the Continental Congress, to which he was re-elected in 1785. However, he then no longer took up his mandate. In 1782 and 1783 he was also a delegate to a constitutional convention of his state. Shortly after the turn of the 19th century, Peabody ran into financial difficulties. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for indebtedness. The outdoor area allowed him to move freely within a certain radius around the city of Exeter. He died there on June 27, 1823.
