National Monument MH17

The Nationaal Monument MH17 is a memorial in Vijfhuizen , Haarlemmermeer municipality in North Holland for the flight MH17 of the Malaysia Airlines , which was shot down on July 17, 2014 over eastern Ukraine. Since the flight from Schiphol ran with KLM - code sharing was offered, the majority of victims were Dutch.

As many trees ( ash trees , apple trees and linden trees ) were planted on the memorial site for the 298 killed , some of them by the bereaved themselves. The trees are arranged in the shape of a green ribbon. According to the Association of Victim Families, this symbolizes hope and the future. A name tag of a dead person is attached to each tree. The path through the “Memorial Forest” leads to a centrally laid out clearing with an amphitheater under the actual monument - a stainless steel ellipse with the names of all victims. This is directed like an eye on a 16 meter wide and four meter high wall made of rusty steel, which has a circular hole above the steel sculpture. The memorial was created by the sculptor Ronald Westerhuis .

The memorial was inaugurated on July 17, 2017, the third anniversary of the shooting down. Over 2000 relatives, the Dutch royal couple Willem-Alexander and Máxima, and members of the government attended the inauguration . By autumn 2018, at least a quarter of the trees had died for unknown reasons.
