National Council of La Raza

The National Council of La Raza (translated as National Council of Spanish Speakers Against Racial Discrimination, abbreviation NCLR ; in Spanish , Raza stands for people in the sense of population ) is an umbrella organization for charitable self-help and advisory organizations against poverty , racial discrimination and lack of education in the US Families with Hispanic or Latino roots. It belongs to the spectrum of the civil rights movement in the USA and is (at least formally) non-party and non-party . The organization operates in over 300 locations across the country.

It is headquartered in Washington, DC and has eight regional offices in Atlanta , Chicago , Los Angeles , New York , Phoenix , Sacramento , San Antonio and San Juan . The current president is Ms. Janet Murguia .

The NCLR emerged as a regional grouping in the early 1960s.

In 1973 the forerunner SWCLR became a national organization, as its second president Raul Yzaguirre was elected. A change in the statutes allowed women to be equally active in the NCLR.

Its importance also increased with immigration to the United States from Mexico and Cuba .
