National Folk Festival (Australia)

The National Folk Festival is a music festival , dedicated to folk music dedicated. It takes place for five days during Easter week on the exhibition grounds in the Mitchell district of the Australian capital Canberra . The National , as it is also known, attracts thousands of visitors of all ages from all over Australia.

The festival includes over 100 concerts as well as numerous improvised street performances, courses in making, playing and repairing musical instruments and courses in folk dances from around the world. There is a big dance on three evenings; a Scottish ball on Friday, an Irish céilí on Saturday and an Australian colonial ball on Sunday.

The festival was first held in Melbourne in 1967 . The venue changed every year from 1969 to 1991; In addition to Melbourne, these were Sydney , Adelaide , Canberra, Brisbane , Fremantle , Alice Springs , Perth and Maleny . The constantly growing program presented the organizing cities with increasing problems. For this reason, Canberra was designated as the permanent venue in 1992 .
