The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is an American institute for research into diseases of the brain and nerves. It is based in Bethesda , Maryland . It is one of the 27 research institutes that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

In Bethesda, over 500 scientists work in clinical and basic research within NINDS . The director of the institute is Walter J. Koroshetz (as of 2017).

Focus

The NINDS is one of the leading research institutes in the field of neuroscience . The main research areas include the neurological consequences of AIDS , Alzheimer's disease , brain tumors , developmental disorders , epilepsy , diseases of the motor neuron , muscular dystrophy , multiple sclerosis , pain , Parkinson's disease , neurodegenerative diseases , sleep disorders , spinal cord injuries , strokes and brain trauma .

Emergence

1950 was established by resolution of the US Congress as the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness . It was renamed the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke in 1968 and the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke in 1975 . It has had its current name since 1988.
