The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is an American institute for research into diseases of the brain and nerves. It is based in Bethesda , Maryland . It is one of the 27 research institutes that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Emergence
1950 was established by resolution of the US Congress as the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness . It was renamed the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke in 1968 and the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke in 1975 . It has had its current name since 1988.
