The Université nationale du Rwanda (English National University of Rwanda , abbreviation NUR ) is the state and with around 11,000 students and around 1,000 employees the largest university in Rwanda . It has its seat in the southern province . The university campus is located in the city of Butare .

The university was founded as the first higher education institution in Rwanda on November 3, 1963. In 1963 the university had 49 students, in 1993 there were around 3,000 at locations in Butare , Kigali and Ruhengeri . In 1994 the university was closed due to the war in the country and the genocide after students and university staff were killed and large parts of the facility were stolen or destroyed. In March 1995 the university was able to reopen at the Butare site with eight faculties and two schools. Since then the university has grown rapidly; after the peak of students in 2011 (around 12,000), it had around 11,000 students in 2012.

The university administers the country-specific domain .rw .

There is a partnership between the University's Agricultural Research Institute and the "Rwanda Development Board" to research and develop the Nyungwe National Park , 40 km further west , one of the three national parks in Rwanda.
