Lilongwe National Botanical Garden

The National Botanic Garden Lilongwe (Engl. Lilongwe National Botanic Garden ) is located in Malawi's capital Lilongwe . It is the second largest of the three state botanical gardens in Malawi. The establishment took place in 1989, like the Botanical Garden of Mzuzu . The oldest of the three state botanical gardens is the Zomba Botanical Garden , founded in 1891 by Alexander Whyte.

Location and climate

The Botanical Garden is located in the Central Region of Malawi. Due to its location, this botanical garden has a warm climate with an annual rainfall of around 2000 mm. The 130.68 hectare garden is located in the heart of the capital and is financed by the state of Malawi.

The majority of the plant species are native species. This includes a collection of domestic aloes (e.g. Aloe cameronii and Aloe chabaudii ) and some asparagus plants ( Albuca sp. , Anthericum sp. ). The Boophone family is also represented with the species Boophone disticha . In addition, around 100 native tree species were planted. These include representatives of the Combretaceae , Caesalpiniaceae , Euphorbiaceae , Ebenaceae , Mimosaceae , Papilionaceae and Rhamnaceae families .

There are also many fruit trees (such as mango , peach , avocado , guava , macadamia nuts, apples , papaya and passion fruit ) on the premises. Vegetables are also grown on an area of ​​0.5 ha, which serves as a source of income for the botanical garden and is sold in Lilongwe's markets.

Rare and threatened plants

The garden also serves to protect and preserve endangered and rare plant species. These include the two species Widdringtonia whytei and Khaya anthotheca .
