Esteros de Farapos National Park

The National Park Esteros de Farapos e islas de Uruguay ( Spanish Parque Nacional Esteros de Farrapos e Islas del Río Uruguay ) is located in Uruguay in the Río Negro department . It extends for about 27 kilometers along the Uruguay River .

History and characteristics

In 2004 the National Park Esteros de Farapos e islas de Uruguay was founded, which stretches from Playa Puerto Viejo near the town of San Javier in the north to Nuevo Berlín , founded by German immigrants . Today the little-known national park is part of the Sistema Nacional de Áreas Protegidas (SNAP) protection program . The total area of ​​the national park is 20,205 ha , on which there are 24 islands, wetlands, forest areas and several streams and rivers. Parts of the Rio Uruguay, including the islands, as well as parts of the adjacent mainland are integrated into the national park. Streams like the Arroyo Farrapos , the Arroyo Román Grande and Arroyo Chico run through the park before they flow into the Rio Uruguay. Some of the islands are inhabited by a small number of people who mainly practice fishing and beekeeping.

The Esteros de Farapos e islas de Uruguay National Park is not only home to the largest swamp area in Uruguay, it is also home to a diverse range of species, especially birds and amphibians. 30 species of mammals, including large cats of prey such as the puma , can still be found at times. Around 200 species of birds, around 25 percent of all bird species found in Uruguayan territory, live in the park. Toads including Rhinella granulosa and frogs such as Hyla pulchella live in the sanctuary next to turkey vultures ( Cathartes aura ), capybaras ( Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris ), mayongs ( Cerdocyon thous ), turtles ( Phrynops hilarii ) and lizards, including the black and white tegu ( Tupinambis merianae ). In the waters of the Rio Uruguay there are several species of catfish and catfish .

The flora of the National Park Esteros de Farapos e islas de Uruguay is made up of different Inga species such as Celtis ehrenbergiana , Sebastiania brasiliensis , Sebastiania klortzschiania , Sapium haematospermum and many more.

Tourist importance and arrival

Arrival is possible from San Javier or Nuevo Berlin. There are campsites and accommodation for tourists in both places. Local fishermen offer fishing trips or island visits. Tourist offers such as bird watching, fishing, trekking or canoeing are also offered.
