The Pieninen National Park (Polish Pieniński Park Narodowy ) is a Polish national park in the Pienines , in the southeastern part of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship on the Polish-Slovak border, south of Hałuszowa and northeast of the High Tatras . Block limestone forms picturesque, almost vertical white walls along the Dunajec river , which breaks through the mountains in a gorge up to 500 m deep. The most famous mountain Trzy Korony ( Three Crowns ) has a height of 982 meters and the highest peak of the Pieninen, the Wysoka in the Little Pieninen , rises to 1050 meters. Characteristic for the landscape of these mountains are the bare rock faces, the isolated rocks.

Wildlife

It can be assumed that between 13,000 and 15,000 animal species live here, i.e. half of the Polish fauna. New species (especially butterflies and insects) have also been discovered that can only be found here. The fauna of southern Europe is abundantly represented here. The rarities include the eagle owl , the wallcreeper , the blue roe , the pygmy owl , the three-toed woodpecker , the black woodpecker and the black stork . The largest predator is the lynx . Otters live on the banks of the Dunajec .

Culture and tourism

In the 13th century, the Pieniny Castle was built within today's national park , the highest mountain castle in Poland (779 m). Two other castles were built on both sides of the roads along the Dunajec, Czorsztyn and Niedzica , which are considered to be the most beautifully situated castles in Poland.

The main attraction of the park is a raft trip on the Dunajec, one of the biggest tourist attractions in Central Europe. Given its location, the park has many vantage points that offer a beautiful panorama of the neighboring mountain ranges. The views of the High Tatras , Gorce and Magura are particularly impressive .
