The Pirin National Park ( Bulgarian Национален парк "Пирин" [ naʦiɔnalɛn park pirin ]) is located in the mountains of the same name in the extreme southwest of Bulgaria . It covers an area of around 40,000 hectares, including the highest peak of the Pirin Mountains , the 2914 m high Wichren . The park is included in the list of Natura 2000 protected areas.

There are 176 funnel lakes in the national park , and more mountain lakes are formed at times when the snow melts. About 80% of the area of the national park is covered with forest; there are many black pines in the woods . The European Natural Heritage Foundation ( Euronatur ) is running a project to protect wolves in the national park , including a large carnivore center.
The Bajkuschewa Mura is one of the oldest trees in the world.
