National Council constituency of Zurich-West
The National Council constituency of Zurich-West was a constituency in elections to the Swiss National Council . It existed from 1911 to 1919 (introduction of today's proportional voting rights ) and covered an area in the west of the canton of Zurich .
Electoral process
This was a plural constituency. This means that although several seats had to be allocated, the majority voting system was used. In the sense of the Romansh majority election , a candidate needed an absolute majority of the votes in order to be elected. Several ballots may have been necessary to distribute all seats. Each voter had as many votes as there were seats to be allocated.
Name and number of seats
Zurich-West is an unofficial geographical name. In official use, consecutive numbering applied across the whole of Switzerland, arranged according to the order of the cantons in the Swiss Federal Constitution, was common . Zurich-West was number 2.
During the constituency revision of 1911, Zurich-West was the only newly created constituency and received five seats.
expansion
The area of the constituency was determined by the “Federal Law on National Council constituencies” of June 23, 1911, as a result of the separation from the Zurich-Southwest constituency . It comprised:
- District III of the City of Zurich ( Aussersihl , Industriequartier and Wiedikon )
- in the rest of the Zurich district, the municipalities of Aesch bei Birmensdorf , Albisrieden , Altstetten , Birmensdorf , Dietikon , Niederurdorf , Oberurdorf , Schlieren and Uitikon
In 1919 the five Zurich constituencies were amalgamated to form the still existing Zurich National Council constituency , in which proportional representation applies.
