Nationella Insatsstyrkan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nationella Insatsstyrkan (NI; Eng. 'National Operational Forces') are the special forces of the Swedish police that operate nationwide .

history

The history of the Swedish special forces goes back to the 19th century. As early as 1887, the first unit of the rapid Swedish riot police , called Piketen in Sweden , was set up in Stockholm . As early as 1939, the Pikets had a Packard , a vehicle that was equipped with a radio. Due to its technical equipment, it was the most modern police car in Europe at the time.

Against the background of the murder of the Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme on February 28, 1986, the Swedish police policy changed: the danger of attacks moved into the public consciousness of Swedes. Two state commissions dealt with counter-terrorism measures that made recommendations to the government. In 1990 the Nationella Insatsstyrkan (NI) was launched as a nationwide anti-terrorist unit . Today they exist as a nationwide police unit to the regional mobile task forces of the Piketen .

tasks

The main responsibilities of the NI include anti-terrorism operations and the fight against organized crime, as well as hostage rescue operations . The forces are also used to intervene against armed persons, in the event of intensified robberies, reconnaissance in inaccessible terrain, in preparations for state visits, negotiations in the event of hostage-taking and in personal protection. Nationella Insatsstyrkan cooperate in training and tactics with the Swedish military and the Swedish Special Forces (SEKs in different parts of Sweden). The police officers are trained at the SIB facility in Stora Sätra and the Police College (Polishögskolan) in Solna near Stockholm.

organization

NI can be used across the country in situations that go beyond the regular work of the local police force or when police officers with relevant experience are required.

NI is part of the national police force in Sweden. Almost 60 police officers belong to the task force. In addition, there is a staff of experienced police officers in the background. The unit includes all police precision shooters in Sweden.

The head of the Nationella Insatsstyrkan is Marie Jarnerus (since February 2010, previously Bertil Olofsson).

NI is currently divided into the following divisions:

  1. alpha
  2. Bravo
  3. Charlie
  4. delta
  5. echo
  6. Fox (sniper)
  7. Golf (sniper)
  8. Hotel (driver)

NI was and is also used abroad to enforce Swedish interests and evacuate citizens.
