Los Volcanes de Teneguía Natural Monument

The Los Volcanes de Teneguía (Volcanoes of Teneguía) natural monument is located in the municipality of Fuencaliente on the Canary Island of La Palma .
Protection purpose
The area was placed under protection in 1987 as part of the Cumbre Vieja y Teneguía Natural Park and separated from it in 1994. It has a size of about 857 hectares.
The purpose of protection is to preserve the volcanic cones and lava flows of the Teneguía volcano, including endemic organisms living there such as the catchy tune Anataelia lavicola .
Fuencaliente salt flats
Within the natural monument, right next to the Faro de Fuencaliente lighthouse , are the Fuencaliente salt flats ( Las Salinas de Fuencaliente ), an area of scientific importance with a size of about 7 hectares . This is home to a number of protected and threatened bird species ( waders and migratory birds ).
The visitor center there (with bar and restaurant) provides information about the two protected areas. The salt pans themselves are also used as a commercial enterprise for the extraction of sea salt and salt flowers ( Flor de Sal ).
Adjacent protected areas
On the sea side, the protected area is surrounded by the Natura 2000 marine reserve Franja Marina de Fuencaliente (coastal strip of Fuencaliente).
