Natural History Museum of Eastern Bavaria in Regensburg

The Natural History Museum of East Bavaria in Regensburg has been housed in the neo-classical Württemberg palace (also known as the Herzogspalais ) in the Herzogspark in the far northwest of the old town of Regensburg since 1961 . The palace was built in 1804 by Fürstlich Thurn und Taxischen Hofrat Georg Friedrich Ritter von Müller according to plans by Emanuel Herigoyen by the Fürstlich Thurn und Taxischen building director Joseph Sorg .

The museum collection

The museum's collection has its roots in the late 18th century. After 1910 it was housed for a long time in a building of the Regensburg District Exhibition in the city park , where it was almost completely destroyed by bombs in 1943. The collection was rebuilt from 1947 in the funeral hall of the former Lazarus cemetery, also in the city park, where the museum was opened and operated in 1950 until it moved to the Württemberg Palace in 1961. The collection focuses on the geological development of Eastern Bavaria . Among other things, a natural history cabinet with a wooden library from 1790 can be seen. An environmental center is affiliated. In addition to numerous animal preparations, there are also a few live specimens (small animals, bees). There is a pond and a geological nature trail in the adjacent Herzogspark.

The museum has an average of around 15,000 visitors a year. Special exhibitions, readings and concerts take place regularly.
