The Eschbachtal nature reserve is located north of Pohlhausen in the town of Wermelskirchen in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis .

The nature reserve comprises an approximately 1.5-kilometer section of the Eschbach and its floodplain on the left between Schlepenpohl in the east and Heienbrucherhammer in the west. To the south it borders on the nature reserve Orchideenwiese near Heintjeshammer .

Protective purposes

The protection designation was issued for the maintenance and development of a partially near-natural stream valley with remains of alluvial forest , grassland and wet and wet grassland , for the implementation of a cross-district biotope network and for the protection, care and development of the communities of plants and animals bound to these habitats. In detail, the following protective purposes were set:

  • Securing the function as a biotope connection area of ​​outstanding importance as a connection area and with connecting elements,
  • Preservation and development of the landscape in its special character, rarity and outstanding beauty,
  • Protection, maintenance and development of the Bachtal with alluvial forest, grassland and wet and wet grassland remnants as well as the rare animal and plant species adapted to the location,
  • Preservation and development of habitats, biotopes or communities of certain wild, characteristic and remarkable animal or plant species,
  • Preservation and safeguarding of the protected biotopes: sedges and rushes rich wet meadows
  • Protection, maintenance and development of a floodplain valley that has been shaped by the historical-industrial use of water power, with the ponds and mill inflows, ditches and moist grassland biotopes.

Prohibitions

To achieve and maintain the protective purposes, in addition to the general protective regulations, it is forbidden to change the groundwater level or to carry out irrigation, drainage or other measures that change the water balance.
