The nature reserve Gesshardthöhle is a 0.52  hectare nature reserve (NSG) northwest of Altroggenrahmede or north of the hamlet Grünewiese in the urban area of Altena in the Märkisches Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia . In 2004 the district government of Arnsberg designated the area as a NSG by ordinance. The NSG has also been declared as a FFH area Gesshardthöhle (No. DE-4711-302) since 2004 . There is also the spelling Geßhardthöhle .

Area description

The NSG is the Gesshardthöhle which is not open to tourists. The cave was discovered in 1911. It is branched into several corridors, the length of which adds up to a total of 209 m. It lies in a calcareous lens of the lower middle Devon . This has created sinter basins fed by dripping water, a temporary standing cave water and spacious halls. In the vicinity of the cave there is a species-rich mixed forest of deciduous and coniferous forest. To the west, south and east the terrain slopes gently towards the floodplains of the Krummenscheider Bach . There are extensive agriculturally used areas. To the north, the terrain rises steeply to 389.6  m above sea level. NHN high cross beech .

Access

The area is difficult to access and also not developed through forestry paths. The cave is closed all year round and is home to several species of bats, amphibians and insects (butterflies, two-winged birds, etc.) in winter.
