The Lauterberg nature reserve in the Long Mountains , east of the town of Oberlauter, is the largest nature reserve in the Coburg district with around 190 hectares and is managed by the DBU Naturerbe .

From a geological point of view, the core area lies in the area of the shell limestone and consists of an approximately 120 ha large grassland area that was created by clearing the formerly predominant mixed forest of ash , sycamore and red beech . The clearing began in the Middle Ages and was extended to the entire summit of 474  m above sea level in the 1930s . NN high Lauterberg expanded. A shepherd who grazes the area with around 2000 sheep on a regular basis takes care of the maintenance of the rough grass. The area, which was used temporarily as a military training area, was designated in 1994 as nature reserve No. 80 in the southern foreland of the Thuringian Forest .

"The purpose of the designation as a nature reserve is to maintain a semi-dry lawn with extensive hedgerows and adjacent forest areas and to protect it as a habitat for flora and fauna that has become rare." (Government Gazette Oberfranken, volume 9/1994, Ordinance on the Lauterberg nature reserve , § 3.1)
