The nature administration ( French Administration de la nature et des forêts ) is a Luxembourg authority and responsible for the conservation of nature and the forest in Luxembourg ( Lëtzebuerg ) and is subordinate to the environment minister (lux .: Ë environment minister ).

The nature administration has its headquarters in Diekirch (lux .: Dikrech ).

Surname

The original name of the authority was according to the law of June 1, 1840: Forest Management (French: Administration forestière ). With the law of April 7, 1909, the name was changed to: Water and Forest Administration (French: Administration des eaux et forêts ). On July 1, 2009, the authority was renamed Nature Management or Administration de la nature et des forêts .

tasks

The tasks of the authority are:

  • Nature conservation, conservation of natural resources, biodiversity (lux .: biodiversity ) and landscapes;
  • Conservation and sustainable forest management of the public forest;
  • Promotion of sustainable forest management in private forests;
  • Protection and sustainable management of wildlife ;
  • Raising public awareness of nature and forests;
  • Monitoring and police tasks in the field of nature conservation , forest protection , hunting and fishing .

Information centers

The authority manages five information centers with the task of informing the public about nature conservation:

  • Biodiversum in Remerschen ,
  • Ellergrond information center ( French : Center d'accueil Ellergrond ) in Esch-sur-Alzette (Ellergrond nature reserve),
  • Information center Mirador (French: Center d'accueil Mirador ) in Steinfort ,
  • Information center for the Manternacher Felsen nature reserve (lux .: Manternacher Fiels nature reserve ; also French: Center d'accueil A Wiewesch ) in Manternach ,
  • Forest research center “Burfelt” (French: Center de découverte de la forêt “Burfelt” ) near Burgfrid (lux .: Burfelt or Buergfrid ; French Bourgfried ) in Insenborn (lux .: Ënsber )

The authority consists of three main departments:

  • Directorate
    • Public Works
    • Computer science
    • Mobile unit for surveillance and police tasks in the areas of nature conservation, forest protection, hunting and fishing
  • Central Services
    • Nature area
    • Forest area
  • Regional services

In 2015 the authority employed 410 people. The title of Head of Authority has changed several times over time

  • “Maître forestier” in the sense of forester (law of June 1, 1840)
  • “Garde général en chef” (Law of November 14, 1849)
  • “Inspecteur des eaux et forêts” in the sense of Forest Inspector (Law of May 17, 1874)
  • “Directeur” iSv director (law of April 7, 1909)
