background

By river regulation , drainage and conversion to agricultural land and settlement areas of the original are over 90% water meadows have been destroyed in Switzerland. They are also of great importance for humans, because floodplains protect against flooding , ensure clean drinking water and are valuable recreational areas.

The Thurauen are the largest floodplain landscape in the Swiss Plateau and a nature reserve of national importance. They are home to a multitude of rare animal and plant species, such as the kingfisher , oriole or beaver . Since 2008 the Thurauen have been the scene of one of the largest renaturations in the country. The Thur is now allowed to flow freely again for the last five kilometers before it flows into the Rhine .

The Thur is not only regaining its dynamism with the project "Flood protection and the floodplain landscape of the Thurm Estuary". For the first time in Switzerland, a link between nature conservation, flood protection and tourism was sought.

To inform the public about the restoration of the Thur and to allow her immediate nature encounters who commissioned the canton of Zurich , the PanEco with the construction and operation of the nature center Thurauen. The nature center is thus part of a donation-financed foundation that campaigns for nature and species protection as well as environmental education and has been awarded the ZEWO seal of approval .

Exhibition and adventure trail
