Navarasa (Alternative title: Nine Emotions ) is an Indian film from the year 2005 . The tragicomedy was directed by Santosh Sivan , who also wrote the screenplay. The main role was played by P. Shwetha . Handmade Productions produced the film.

action

Thirteen-year-old Indian Shwetha lives with her parents and her uncle in a house. One day she spies on her uncle and sees, without his knowledge, women dressing him in women's clothes. She realizes that her uncle Gautham is a transvestite, but hides this from her parents, since the uncle would presumably be kicked out of the house by Shwetha's father.

When her parents leave, Gautham is supposed to take care of Shwetha. He goes to the Kuvagam Festival, an annual festival where thousands of transsexuals meet to bring the myth of Aravan and Mohini back to life. Shwetha sets off to come to the festival and look for her uncle. Meanwhile, she meets the transsexual Bobby Darling and becomes friends with him. The two arrive at the festival, where Bobby Darling explains the Hindu background of the festival to her and wins a beauty pageant. Shwetha finally finds her uncle and the two drive back home.

History of origin

The film, which was released in Indian cinemas on October 21, 2005, was not based on an actual script, just an idea; most of it came about as improvisation on location. Santosh Sivan, best known for high-budget successes like Asoka - The Way of the Warrior , was fascinated by the fate of the visitors to the Koovagam Festival and decided to make a film about the festival and its religious background. For the film mainly amateur actors were used.

Reviews

Variety.com wrote that the objective view of the festivities would be the most interesting thing about the film, but that it lacks structure and that Sivan's compositional eye seems to have been reduced by the low budget. ( Objective look at the festivities are the pic's most interesting sections, but the whole lacks a sense of build-up and Sivan's compositional eye appears to have been compromised by the restrictions of a lower budget. )

Awards

The film ran in 2005 at the Pusan International Film Festival and in 2006 in the competition at the Innsbruck International Film Festival , but had to admit defeat to the Sino-South Korean drama Mang Zhong .

At the Monaco International Film Festival , the film won the Angel Independent Spirit Award and Bobby Darling won the Best Supporting Actor award . Navarasa won the National Film Award for Best Picture in Tamil .
