Navin Ramankutty

Navin Ramankutty is an agricultural geographer. He is Professor and Holder of the Canada Research Chair in Global Environmental Change and Food Safety at the Liu Institute for Global Issues and the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability at the University of British Columbia .

Life

Ramankutty graduated from the College of Technology in India with a bachelor's degree in 1991, a master’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1994 under the supervision of Michael E. Schlesinger, and a doctoral degree from the University of Wisconsin in 2000 under the supervision of Jonathan A. Foley . He was an assistant professor at McGill University from 2006 .

Act

Ramankutty's research is concerned with understanding the use and change of the earth's land surface for agriculture by humans and the effects on the global environment. Using global earth observations and numerical ecosystem models, his research aims to find solutions to the problem of feeding mankind with the smallest possible global ecological footprint .

He contributed to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Report and the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
