G. David Tilman (originally Titman ; born July 22, 1949 in Aurora , Illinois ) is an American ecologist and recipient of the 2008 International Biology Prize , the 2014 BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award, and the 2014 Balzan Prize .

Tilman earned his Ph.D. Degree from the University of Michigan in 1976 . He is Professor and McKnight Presidential Chair in Ecology at the University of Minnesota and a lecturer in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology , Microbiology, and Behavioral Biology . He is the director of the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve for long-term studies of ecology. Tilman was a Guggenheim Fellow and is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , the National Academy of Sciences, and the Royal Society .

Resource competition & community structure

Tilman became known for his work on competition in plant communities with regard to biodiversity and its ecosystem functions. In 1994, an article in Nature entitled Biodiversity and stability in grasslands caused a stir. In it he presents data from an experiment started in 1982 with over 200 plots on a meadow in the Cedar Creek National History Area in Minnesota . Each of the plots was examined for the factors biodiversity and biomass in relation to the plant society for 20 years . Tilman's article published data on development before and after a 1988 drought that had a startling impact on the plots. Although the drought had an existential disturbance, the biomass data show a positive correlation between biodiversity within a plant society and the stability of this society as a whole; these results empirically support the diversity-stability hypothesis .
