Michael E. Schlesinger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Earl Schlesinger (born February 23, 1943 in Los Angeles ; died April 11, 2018 in Champaign , Illinois ) was an American meteorologist and professor of atmospheric sciences as well as director of the Climate Research Group at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who dealt intensively with changes in the ozone layer and global warming . In 2007 he received together with Al Gore the Nobel Peace Prize for research on climate change for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change .

Life

Schlesinger was the son of Samuel Schlesinger and his wife Beryl (nee Robinson). He earned his bachelor's degree in 1965 and his master's degree in 1970 from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). He then studied meteorology and received his doctorate in 1976 with a paper entitled A numerical simulation of the general circulation of atmospheric ozone for doctor of philosophy . He was considered an expert in creating climate models and in simulations and analyzes of climate change. He dealt with climate events of the geological past in order to derive scenarios for the future or to understand how the increased concentrations of greenhouse gases or the aerosols produced by humans affect this development.

Schlesinger has been a professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 1989. Before that, he worked as an engineer for various companies from 1964 to 1966. In 1966 he became Research Assistant at the UCLA Institute of Transportation and Traffic Engineering and from 1967 to 1969 at the UCLA School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. From 1971 to 1974 he was Research Assistant at the UCLA Department of Meteorology and 1973 to 1976 Resident Consultant for the Climate Dynamics Program in Rand, Santa Monica. From 1979 to 1981 he was also an expert in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in Washington, DC In addition, from 1976 to 1989 he was assistant professor at the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University.

The
Schlesinger family was married twice and had several children and grandchildren. His parents, the second wife and his brother died before him. He died of a heart attack.

2007 Nobel Peace Prize

For Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 'Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change')

“The 2007 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded jointly to Al Gore and to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for their efforts in building and disseminating greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures needed to counteract that change. [...]
Donald Wuebbles and Michael Schlesinger were recognized by a special certificate by the IPCC for their leadership roles in the work. "
