The Netzwerk Nebenan.de is an Internet platform of Good Hood GmbH, Berlin, which offers services for the development and promotion of so-called neighborhoods. You can only get a user account in your own (proven) neighborhood; You can only come into contact with this and neighboring neighborhoods. The network was built up by a six-person founding team around Christian Vollmann and put into operation at the end of 2015. The platform is financed through income from local advertising, from voluntary contributions and from fees for so-called organization profiles .

neighborhood

A neighborhood is understood to be a village or a district with a few hundred to a few thousand inhabitants. About 30,000 neighborhoods are planned; Of these, over 7,200 (as of January 2019) are already activated. You can only become a member in the neighborhood in which you can be shown to live. If ten interested parties have registered in a neighborhood, this is activated.

Goals and scope of functions

The aim of the network is to get to know neighbors in the vicinity of one's own residence, to establish and deepen contacts, and to help one another. It is possible to do this:

  • Announce events (optionally also visible outside of your own neighborhood),
  • Send messages to members of your own neighborhood and those of neighboring neighborhoods (searches, offers, recommendations, general messages),
  • Form groups and
  • Send notifications to a group or an individual member.

If visibility from the individual adjacent neighborhoods has been released by the member, members from adjacent neighborhoods are shown the first name and the first letter of the last name, not the address. The house number is also only displayed in the immediate vicinity if required by a corresponding setting under the "Privacy" section. Further information can also be provided there, the visibility of which must then also be confirmed in the neighborhood. The following can be selected as basic information: the year of birth , your own interests (e.g. sport, DIY), your own offers (e.g. renting tools, watering flowers, etc.), partners , children , pets and other descriptive texts about the own person.

Since the middle of 2018, Nebenan.de has also offered the option of creating so-called "organization profiles". These are reserved for organizations and institutions under public or private law that serve the common good and act without commercial purposes or belong to the municipal administration and perform public tasks. The around 500 users to date include municipal offices , social work organizations , emergency services, non-profit organizations, neighborhood initiatives and associations . The organizations mainly use Nebenan.de for event notices , for the acquisition of further volunteers and for the exchange with the neighbors in the catchment area (regarding suggestions for improvement and the like).

Creation and operation

In 2011, the neighborhood network nextdoor went online in the USA . Based on this idea, the Nebenan.de company founder Christian Vollmann decided to found a German social neighborhood network. Together with five other people, including his brother Michael Vollmann and Till Behnke, he founded Good Hood GmbH and the non-profit Nebenan.de Foundation gGmbH in 2015 . The first neighborhood group was opened in January 2016. The company's initial capital was 8 million euros and originally came from Christian Vollmann and other investors; In 2017, Burda-Verlag and the venture capitalist Lakestar each invested 17%. In a financing round in March 2018, Good Hood GmbH received EUR 16 million. In addition to increased involvement by Burda Verlag and Lakestar, Deutsche Telemedien , NWZ and pd ventures also invested .

In 2016, Nebenan.de won the Excellent Places in the Land of Ideas competition .

In the meantime (April 2018) Till Behnke and Christian Vollmann are managing directors of Good Hood GmbH, which operates the network Nebenan.de and the French counterpart mesvoisins.fr , as well as the Spanish tienes-sal.es and the Italian vicinimiei.it . Michael Vollmann is also managing director of the Nebenan.de Foundation together with Sebastian Gallander . For the first time in 2017, together with Diakonie Deutschland , Zalando and the German TV Lottery, they awarded the German Neighborhood Prize endowed with 50,000 euros. The Nebenan.de Foundation is a member of the Social Entrepreneurship Network Germany .

In October 2018, the number of members reached the 1 million mark and 1.2 million in May 2019. The number of neighborhoods that had emerged up to then was around 7,000 at this point in time.

Nebenan.de claims that it is currently working on a model to finance itself from paid advertising by local traders. In addition, Nebenan.de generates income through fees for the above. Organization profiles . In addition, the registered users can support the company financially as so-called "sponsors" on a voluntary basis with a monthly contribution.

privacy

Nebenan.de refrains from “evaluating personal data, displaying advertising on this basis and passing this information on to third parties.” There is “little advertising and then only on a geographical and non-personal basis”. That is the core brand of Nebenan.de .

To register on the website, you must provide your full name and address. This data is verified by Nebenan.de (for example with a copy of an identity card or with a verification code by post, now also by GPS) in order to check whether the person actually lives in the specified neighborhood. The data provided by the members are only visible to the members of the same neighborhood and in shortened form to those of the adjacent neighborhoods.

The platform uses various technologies to analyze user behavior.

Nebenan.de had a system check carried out by TÜV Saarland as a “checked online portal” and a data protection check carried out by external data protection officers .

Majority takeover by Burda

In September 2020, Nebenan.de announced the takeover of 61% of the company shares from Hubert Burda Media . A double-digit million amount is said to have been paid for this. Some of the financial investors are leaving the company. A large part of the founding team remains on board. Burda’s entry should make Nebenan.de profitable.

criticism

The consumer center in Hanover warned in 2017 that next-door.de does not cost any money, but could become a service where you pay with your data. There were also isolated voices from local politics and research that it could not be ruled out that next-door.de would one day use the data for advertising purposes or sell it to partners. Police authorities in several federal states consider the disclosure of some personal data within the platform to be risky.
