The Main-Neckar Railway from Frankfurt to Heidelberg began operating in 1846 without the two largest engineering structures on the line, the (old) Main-Neckar Bridge over the Main in Frankfurt and the Neckar Bridge near Ladenburg, having been completed. Provisional measures arose in both places until the two stone bridges were built in 1848: In Frankfurt, operations were only carried out as far as the south Main bank in the Sachsenhausen train station (later: "Local train station " ) over the hairpin of the Mainspitze train station , in Ladenburg over a temporary wooden bridge. From June 14, 1846, the trains ran on both sides to the bridge, and passengers still had to cross the temporary bridge on foot. From July 27, 1846, the trains ran continuously between Frankfurt and Heidelberg, but the cars were pushed onto the bridge and picked up by a second locomotive from the other side . Locomotives were not yet allowed to drive on the bridge. That was only possible from October 9, 1846.

On August 24, 1848, the stone bridge could then be put into operation.

When the Baden Revolution was suppressed in 1849, the Neckar Bridge in Ladenburg was fiercely contested.

In 1945 the bridge was blown up. In 1946 it was temporarily restored in its old form in 1948.
