The Neckarwiese is a green area in Heidelberg on the north bank of the Neckar . With a good five hectares, it is the largest urban green space.

It stretches for a little over a kilometer at the exit from the neckar valley from the Odenwald on the northern bank. The park is 50 meters wide on average and is loosely covered with large poplars , linden trees , willows and alders , and halfway along the edge of the promenade is a chestnut avenue . In the park, which essentially stretches between Theodor Heuss and Ernst Walz bridges , there is a central fountain with a children's playground, toilets and shower facilities, and a kiosk as well as a DLRG rescue station in the middle .

history

There, at the level of the former ford , was also the stone pier bridge, which was guarded by the nearby fort, during the Roman Empire. When Neuenheim was incorporated in 1891, the Neckar foreland was still a relatively undeveloped bank zone on which the boats of the fishing village lay. With the expansion of the Neckar as a federal waterway from 1921 onwards, protests arose because it was feared that this would bring excursion shipping on the Neckar to a standstill. However, when the water level was made navigable and the water level more uniform, the Neckarwiese was fortified and widened. Nevertheless, the floodplains , most of which are less than a meter above the mean Neckar level, are still regularly inundated by medium and heavy floods.

use

The meadow is not only used as a general recreational area, but is also the venue for many official and unofficial events. In addition to regular sports events such as the annual Heidelberger Rowing Regatta in May, the festival of sport with wheelchair marathon in July and the Heidelberg Triathlon in August found there about the Children's Theater Festival in October and many irregular events such as the agenda day, celebrations for World Children's Day, Public Viewing for the soccer world championship 2006 etc. takes place. In addition, the Lebendige Neckar takes place once a year in connection with the Aok-Radsonntag, at which numerous non-profit associations present themselves and thus fill the entire Neckarwiese in some years. The two barbecue areas, which were set up in 2006, and the noise in the evenings are causing heated and ongoing debates in local politics.
