Neeltje Jans is an artificial, uninhabited island in the Dutch province of Zeeland . It is located between the islands of Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland , but politically it is part of the municipality of Veere on the Walcheren peninsula . The name Neeltje Jans comes from a boat that was stranded on the island and originally goes back to the regional, Germanic patron saint Nehalennia .
history
Construction of the Delta Works
Until the start of the construction of the Delta Works, Neeltje Jans was just a sandbank at the mouth of the Oosterschelde into the North Sea . For the work, however, the sandbank was raised and a working island was created, which was used during the construction of the large storm surge barrier Oosterscheldekering .
Conservation and amusement park
After the completion of the Delta Works in 1986, the island was bought by the Vereniging Natuurmonumenten and the interest group Het Zeeuwse Landschap. They set up a nature reserve and built an amusement park. Various boat and hiking tours start from here, during which visitors can explore the Oosterschelde area. Neeltje Jans has been part of the Oosterschelde National Park since 2002, and the island has been home to its visitor center ever since.
