Neil Gershenfeld

Neil A. Gershenfeld (born December 1, 1959 ) is an American physicist and computer scientist .

Gershenfeld first studied physics at Swarthmore College (graduated in 1981) and then made his PhD in 1990. at Cornell University . He worked for Bell Laboratories , among others . He currently heads the Center for Bits and Atoms at MIT , a spin-off from the MIT Media Lab . There he conducts research in various areas of physical computing and alternative computer technologies. He founded the first Fablab there and is considered the founder and thought leader of the free hardware movement.

In 2007 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .
