Neith Nevelson (born July 24, 1946 in New York City , New York ) is an American painter .

Life

Neith Nevelson comes from a Jewish-American family of artists. Her father, Myron Mike Nevelson (1922-2019), was a well-known sculptor, her mother, Susan Nevelson (1924-2015), was an Italian fashion designer. Her paternal grandmother was Louise Nevelson (1899–1988), one of the most important sculptors of the twentieth century. She grew up in Florence , Italy and New York, where her talent was recognized early on, while she learned to paint rather autodidactically . She only studied for a short time at the Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze . After completing her studies, she was temporarily assistant to the Spanish painter Salvador Dalí .

Neith Nevelson was politically active in Italy, but left the country because of a trial that was due in 1977. She now lives in Coconut Grove , Miami, Florida.

Neith Nevelson's works show traces of Cubism , Expressionism and Surrealism . Her subjects are unconventionally limited to female nudes , horses and men's heads. Within the American art world it is assigned to the Art Brut (Outsider Art).

Her first exhibition took place in 1974 in the Galleria Nuova in Florence. Exhibitions followed from Florida to New York City, including in the Guggenheim Museum .
