The International Nelson Mandela Day ( Engl . : Nelson Mandela International Day ) is a day of remembrance , which was declared on the initiative of the United Nations by its General Assembly on November 10, 2009 and is intended to encourage humanitarian behavior. The day of remembrance has been celebrated annually since 2010 on July 18 , the birthday of the South African Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nelson Mandela (1918–2013).

The call to all people associated with this day includes, according to their goals, an active personal contribution to the improvement of conditions worthy of criticism or in the form of exemplary assistance in society. The number 67 plays a central role, for example in challenging solutions such as:

  • 67 ways to change the world (German for example: " 67 ways to change the world ")
  • 67 minutes of their time to help others (German about: " 67 minutes of their time to help others ") is expressed.

Nelson Mandela had dedicated 67 years of his life to the goals of a humane, just and free society in South Africa. On this day, people should honor his life's work in the struggle for peace and a culture of peace in such a way that they do something for 67 minutes in accordance with these goals.

According to the South African Embassy in Berlin, “Mandela Day is a call for charitable deeds by and for people around the globe - it calls for people to take responsibility and improve the world step by step, as Nelson Mandela did . "

In South Africa, bear the Nelson Mandela Foundation ( Nelson Mandela Foundation ), the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund ( Nelson Mandela Children's Fund ) and the Mandela Rhodes Foundation ( Mandela Rhodes Foundation ) for organizing the commemoration at.

Although conceived as an international day, appeals are also addressed to the South African society itself, which is characterized by the consequences of the apartheid epoch.
