Neo is a planned language that was developed in the 1930s and introduced in 1961 and 1966 by the Belgian Arturo Alfandari (1888–1969) in his books " Cours pratique de Neo " (1961) and " Rapid Method of Neo ".

The language is in the tradition of Esperanto , Ido and Novial and is an Esperantid . The grammar takes up only two pages in this book and includes the entire set of rules, which concerns the spelling and pronunciation, all parts of speech, syntax , tenses and vocabulary .

In the 1960s, the planned language was presented in Floyd and Evelyn Hardin's " International Language Review ", whereby a friendship developed between the editors and the inventor, which eventually found expression in the "Friends of Neo" association. For a couple of years it looked like Neo was serious competition for Esperanto and Interlingua . Due to Alfandari's death, however, it was almost completely forgotten.

Douglas S. Blacklock is an avid supporter of the language and has translated many texts into Neo, including his own poems and parts of the Bible . “ Blessed are the poor in spirit, because the kingdom of heaven belongs to them ” reads as follows in Neo: “ Ixa lo spirtopovas, the zia lo cela royado. “What is striking about this translation and a characteristic feature of Neo is the brevity of the expression. Neo-sentences are usually a lot shorter than their English and German counterparts.

Even proper names are adjusted in Neo, for example Shakespeare becomes Shexpir and Hamlet's famous monologue " Si o no si, em lo qestyon ".

The number system created from a sound aesthetic point of view is as follows:

1 un, 2 du, 3 tre, 4 qar, 5 qin, 6 sit, 7 sep, 8 ot, 9 non, 10 is, 11 isun, 12 isdu, ..., 20 duis, 21 duisun, ..., 30 treis, 40 qaris, ..., 100 ek, 1000 mil, 5184 qinmil ek otisqar

Text examples

The "our father" on Neo:

Na patro ki sar in cel,
siu ta nom santat.
Venu ta regno.
Siu fat ta vol,
asben in cel, as on ter.
Well shakida pan ne diu oje.
A pardonu na debos,
as nos pardonar na deberos.
E no ne induku in tentado,
mo ne fridu there times.
