Neobuxbaumia tetetzo is a species of the genus Neobuxbaumia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Spanish common names are "Cardón", "Higos de Teteche", "Teteche" and "Tetetzo".
description
Neobuxbaumia tetetzo grows columnar with mostly branching shoots and reaches heights of up to 15 meters. A trunk up to 70 centimeters in diameter is formed. The gray-green shoots are 8 to 12 meters long and 18 to 30 centimeters in diameter. The 15 to 20 blunt ribs are somewhat rounded. The mostly single central spine is blackish and up to 5 centimeters long. The 8 to 13 blackish radial spines have a length of 1 to 2 centimeters.
The bell-shaped to funnel-shaped flowers appear near the shoot tips. They are whitish and 5 to 6 inches long. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with humps, scales, wool and bristles. The egg-shaped green fruits are up to 4 inches long and have thorns.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Neobuxbaumia tetetzo is common in the Mexican states of Puebla and Oaxaca .
It was first described as Pilocereus tetetzo in 1897 by Karl Moritz Schumann . Curt Backeberg placed the species in the genus Neobuxbaumia in 1938 .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
