The Neocallimastigaceae are a family of fungi that live in the digestive tract of mammals and which alone make up the order Neocallimastigales . Since 2007, the family is in its own class Neocallimastigomycetes and department Neocallimastigomycota asked.

features

The species form a mononuclear or polynuclear thallus . The cells do not have any mitochondria , but they do have hydrogenosomes that have emerged from mitochondria.

The zoospores have one to many flagella . A kinetosome is present but not functional. The kinetosome is partially surrounded by a complex, electron-dense, saddle-like structure that extends to the plasma membrane. The root of the kinetosome consists of an irregular collection of microtubules that pull from a spur of the kinetosome into the cytoplasm. Centrioles are absent. The nuclear envelope remains intact throughout mitosis . The ribosomes are mainly located in the center of the cell.

Way of life

The species live as obligate anaerobic symbionts in the rumen and large intestine of herbivorous mammals.

Systematics

The order was placed earlier to the Chytridiomycetes . However, since 2007 it has formed its own department.
