The neon demoiselle ( Pomacentrus coelestis ) is a small damselfish from the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific . Their range includes Sri Lanka and the Andaman Sea , the Cocos Keeling Islands , Christmas Island , the Indo-Australian archipelago and the western Pacific from southern Japan to the Tuamotu archipelago . It is very ground-based and mainly inhabits outer reefs with strong currents and waves.

The neon demoiselle is closely related to Pomacentrus auriventris and Pomacentrus similis and with these species forms a species complex called "blue demoiselle".

features

Neon-Demoisellen form different colored local forms. What they all have in common is the bright blue basic color. The caudal fin, anal fin, and / or abdomen may be yellow in some populations. The population in the Andaman Sea and Sri Lanka is particularly dark blue. It lacks the yellow colors of the fins and belly. The fish are a maximum of seven centimeters long. The body height is 2.5 to 2.6 centimeters. They have 17 to 18 scales along the lateral line organ . The number of gill trap processes is 20 to 22.

Fin formula : dorsal XIII / 13–15, anal II / 14–15, pectoral 17–18

Reproduction

Like all damselfish, neon demos are substrate spawners . The larvae hatch after three to four days and live pelagic for a few weeks , after which they switch to the reef-related life of the adult fish.
