The Neoplecostominae are one of the seven subfamilies of the armor catfish (Loricariidae). The distribution area is in southeastern Brazil and includes the coastal rivers that flow into the sea south of the river basin of the Rio São Francisco .

features

The species of Neoplecostominae are 4 to 17 cm long and have a typical armor catfish shape with an elongated, flattened body and a flat head with a sucking mouth. Characteristic of the subfamily are a widespread pelvic fin spine (not in Hemipsilichthys bahianus ) and the loss of abdominal armor (not in the genera Isbrueckerichthys and Neoplecostomus ). The species of the Neoplecostominae have a similar habitat as that of the genus Chaetostoma from the subfamily Ancistrinae , namely fast flowing waters in mountainous areas and therefore resemble them in their external shape ( convergent evolution ). Chaetostoma only occurs in the Andes and in some tepuis in the mountainous regions of Guiana , while the Neoplecostominae live in southeastern Brazil.

Usually the Neoplecostominae are dark brown in color and show spots or saddle-shaped markings. With the exception of some deeply embedded bone plates in the Isbrueckerichthys and Neoplecostomus genera , the belly is unarmored. Four or more bone plates are counted in front of the dorsal fin, and a row of bone plates is located on the tail stalk (exceptions are Isbrueckerichthys and an undescribed Hemipsilichthys species, which have five or more rows of bone plates). In contrast to Chaetostoma , the Neoplecostominae lack odontodes on the “cheeks”.

Genera and species

The Neoplecostominae include seven genera and about 45 species:
