Nephilengys is a genus of tropical true spiders from the family of silk spiders (Nephilidae). The genus was formerly also placed in the families Real orb web spiders (Araneidae) and in the thick jaw spiders (Tetragnathidae). In some English-language sources this genus is also called hermit spiders (German: "Einsiedlerspinnen").
This genus builds a tubular retreat in their webs , which is used as soon as the spiders feel disturbed. As with the related genus Nephila , the females are much larger than the males. In Nephilengys malabariensis, for example, the females are 20 mm tall, whereas the males are only 4 mm.
Systematics and distribution
The genus currently only includes two species, as several species from Kuntner et al. in the new genus Nephilingis Kuntner , were spun off in 2013 . (As of December 2015)
- Nephilengys malabarensis ( Walckenaer , 1842) - India to China , Philippines , Japan , Ambon
- Nephilengys papuana Thorell , 1881 - New Guinea , Queensland
