Nereo Costantini (born November 13, 1905 in Nogara ; died August 5, 1969 in Verona ) was an Italian sculptor.

Life

Nereo Costantini was born to farm workers. From the age of 17 the landlord made it possible for him to study at the Accademia di belle arti "Gian Bettino Cignaroli" in the provincial capital of Verona . Costantini was invited to the Venice Biennale in 1938 . He then moved his studio to the San Procolo district in Verona , where he carried out commissions for various churches in Verona. He was invited to the 8th Quadriennale di Roma in 1959 and the 9th Quadriennale in 1965. Costantini also worked as a medalist .

Costantini is the creator of the bronze statue of Giulietta Capuleti in front of the Casa di Giulietta in Verona. The 2.65 m high statue was erected there in 1972 by the municipality of Verona and has been a much photographed object for tourists ever since. A copy has been there since 2014 for conservation reasons.

Since Munich has been the twin city of Verona since 1960 , the Sparkasse von Verona donated two replicas of this Juliet statue to the Stadtsparkasse München in 1974 for its 150th anniversary. One was set up on Shakespeareplatz in the Bogenhausen district , the second on the south side of the Old Town Hall .

The municipality of Nogara named a street after Nereo Costantini.
