Nergal-ereš

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nergal-ēreš (always d IGI.DU, reading not completely certain, also Palil-ēreš) was from at least 803 to 775 BC. An Assyrian governor ( limu ) in western and southwestern Assyria under Adad-nīrārī III. and Shalmaneser IV. He was first governor of Raṣappa , then of Sirqu, Laqe , Hindanu (from 797 BC, royal stele of Saba'a), Anat and Suhi (both after 797 BC).

He erected both the Tell al-Rimah and the Schech Hamad stele, which was found by Hormuzd Rassam in 1879 and is now in the British Museum . Another fragment found its way into the art trade, the whereabouts of which is unknown, the abbreviated form of the campaigns of Adad-nīrārī III. in the west, and especially the defeat of Damascus , in which Nergal-ēreš probably played a major role. Tadmor considers him the "strong man" in the time of the young Adad-nirari III.

His seal has been handed down; in contrast to other governor's seals of that time, it only contains characters.

His eunuchs were Išme-ilu (God has heard), who is known from a seal imprint from the lower town of Dur-Katlimmu (SH 03/5953/0208) and Aššur-belu-uṣur, also attested by a seal. The seal of Išme-ilu shows a lion kite.
