List of grape varieties

Lambrusca di Alessandria is a red wine variety that, despite having a similar name, is not one of the more than 60 varieties of the Lambrusco family . Their cultivation is permitted in Piedmont in the provinces of Alessandria , Asti and Cuneo as well as the metropolitan city of Turin . The variety is rarely offered as a single variety and is expanded in a blend with the varieties Barbera , Dolcetto , Freisa and Bonarda . It can be used in the DOC wine Langhe rosso .

The grape variety has probably been grown for several centuries. It is believed that it was already described by Petrus de Crescentiis in his work Ruralium Commodorum under the name Porcina .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is very hairy with white wool, with a crimson tinge. The green, reddish-spotted young leaves are still slightly hairy
  • The medium-sized, almost pentagonal leaves (see also the leaf shape article ) are three-lobed (rarely also five-lobed) and have a medium-deep curve. The stem bay is V-shaped open. The leaf margin is serrated to a point. Compared to other grape varieties, the teeth are set medium wide.
  • The conical to pyramidal grapes are large and densely berried. The round berries are small to medium-sized and black and blue in color. The juice of the berries is almost neutral, although slightly bitter.

Lambrusca di Alessandria sprouts late and thus avoids late spring frosts. The moderately vigorous variety produces good yields.

The Lambrusca di Alessandria grape variety ripens around 20 days after the Gutedel and is therefore almost still ripening for a red grape variety. It can therefore thrive in the cold and humid high altitudes of Alessandria and Asti.
