history

NetNewsWire was initially developed as shareware by Brent and Sheila Simmons for their company Ranchero Software . On July 12, 2002, a free lite version was initially released , which lacked some more advanced features compared to the regular version presented later. NetNewsWire 1.0 was released on February 11, 2003 and version 2.0 was released in May 2005.

In October 2005, Ranchero Software and NetNewsWire were acquired by NewsGator. Version 3.0 was released on June 5, 2007. Starting with the release of NetNewsWire 3.1 on January 9, 2008, NetNewsWire was offered free of charge in order to serve as an advertisement for further software offerings from NewsGator. NetNewsWire Lite was discontinued at the same time.

Since May 2008 the program has also been available in German.

Since version 3.2, which was presented on September 23, 2009, NetNewsWire has synchronized itself with Google Reader and can send articles to Instapaper . In addition to a free, but ad-financed version, there was now again a paid, ad-free version of the program.

On March 2, 2011, NetNewsWire Lite 4.0 was released. As before, it is an advertising-free version of the program, but it lacks essential features. This is based on a completely newly written code base , which should also be used in the future for the paid version as well as for the iOS versions of the program.

On June 3, 2011, the sale of NetNewsWire to Black Pixel was announced. Above all, this was a reaction to the greatly increased development effort, which could no longer be achieved alone. In the course of the sale, the lite version was discontinued. Since then, NetNewsWire is only available in an ad-supported version. Advertising can be switched off by purchasing a license.

In June 2013, a beta version of NetNewsWire 4 was released.

Since Brent Simmons bought back the rights to the program in August 2018, he has been developing it "out of love, not for money", building the application from scratch. On May 25, 2019, he announced the release of NetNewsWire 5.0d17, the first version to be feature-complete . At least macOS 10.14.4 is required . The program is under MIT license .
