New Zrin
Neu-Zrin ( Croatian Novi Zrin , Hungarian Zrinyiújvár , Turkish Yeni Zerinvar Kalesi ), obsolete Neu-Serin , was a fortress near the mouth of the Mur River into the Drava , in the far east of today's northern Croatian County Međimurje next to the village of Donja Dubrava .
history
In 1661 the Ban of Croatia Nikolaus Zrinski had the fortress New Zrin built. The fortress was named after the castle Zrin , the seat of the aristocratic family Zrinski (= von Zrin), a branch of the Šubić family , which has been occupied by the Ottomans since 1577 .
Neu-Zrin primarily served as a counter-fortress to the fortress town of Kanizsa in southwest Hungary, which was lost to the Ottomans in the Long Turkish War in 1600 .
The Ottomans besieged New Zrin several times in the following three years, but Zrinski's troops always managed to defend the fortress. During the Turkish War of 1663/1664 a large Turkish army attacked in early June 1664 and the fortress was destroyed during the month-long siege of Neu-Zrin on July 7, 1664.
At the place where the fortress once stood, an obelisk was set up on the right bank of the Mur as a memorial . The area of the former fortress is now divided between the municipality of Legrad in the Croatian county of Koprivnica-Križevci and the Republic of Hungary.
