The New Democracy ( Albanian  Demokracia e Re , DR for short , Macedonian Нова Демократија , Nova Demokratija ) is a political party in North Macedonia . It was founded in 2008 by former supporters of the Albanian Democratic Party and held four parliamentary seats until the next parliamentary elections in June 2011 , in which, however, it lost all.

ideology

The party primarily represents the minority rights of the Albanian population in the Republic of North Macedonia. In addition, she has many other more democratic-conservative views. Among other things, she is in favor of North Macedonia joining NATO and the European Union . She sees the United States as a strategically important partner with which North Macedonia should maintain good relations. In the "Albanian question" of North Macedonia, she sees the Ohrid Framework Agreement as the basis for equality between the Albanian minority and the (Slavic) Macedonian majority . In addition to safeguarding the rights of the Albanians in North Macedonia, it also stands for the creation of a multi-ethnic state, without the dominance of the Macedonians or any other ethnic group. It also stands for a complete change in national symbols such as flag, anthem, etc. Ä., since these do not reflect the multicultural character of the central Balkan country.

organization

Imer Selmani has been party leader since it was founded . However, he resigned after the parliamentary elections in June 2011 . The vice-chairs are Flora Kadriu , Mirjana Sejdini , Abedin Zymberi and Xhever Ymeri . Since its division from the Albanian Democratic Party, the DR had four seats in parliament, which were occupied by Imer Selmani, Flora Kadriu, Abedin Zymberi and Sulejman Rushiti . In the parliamentary elections on June 5, 2011, the result for the DR was devastating: it could not win a single seat; only 1.78% of the electorate voted for the New Democracy.

The DR is subordinate to the "Forum of Young Democrats" (alb. Forumi i democëve të rinj ). In Aračinovo (Alb. Haraçin ) it provides its only mayor in the local government, namely Bastri Bajrami .

2010 presidential elections

The DR took part in the presidential elections in March 2010 with its party leader Imer Selmani, who came third out of seven candidates and received a total of 145,379 votes (14.99%).

Political activities

On November 14, 2010, the party organized a protest movement in front of the parliament of North Macedonia against the census law, which has been controversial among many parties for some time. With the main slogan Nuk regjistrohesh, nuk ekziston! (Eng. "If you are not registered, you do not exist!") the rally was comparatively peaceful.

Together with the Social Democrats and other smaller parties , the New Democracy boycotted any further parliamentary session on January 30th . The reason they cited was that Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski had been severely restricting the freedom of the press in the country for some time and that he and his family were engrossed in corruption . The boycott lasted until the parliamentary elections in 2011, when the DR now no longer holds a single seat.
