New raven press

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Neue Rabenpresse is a small publishing house founded in 1967 in Berlin-Kreuzberg by the publisher and writer Victor Otto Stomps , whose name refers to the "old" Rabenpresse (1926–1937).

VO Stomps had already achieved great renown in professional circles through the Rabenpresse and the Eremitenpresse (1949-2010), because since the 1920s he and his publishers had promoted artists who at the same time would hardly have had publication opportunities on the classic book market. Poetry and shorter texts were the focus of his entire publishing activity, as well as a very individual characterization of the book editions in terms of formats, types of paper and typography. The books were often illustrated by painters and graphic artists who were also at the very beginning of their careers.

After the seizure of power of the Nazis work was Rabenpresse increasingly difficult. Stomps had to give up the publishing house in 1937 and his publishing activity was largely interrupted for more than 10 years. However, he managed to produce numerous private prints until 1943, such as B. two publications by Oskar Loerke in 1938 and 1939.

Publishing history

In 1966 VO Stomps had withdrawn from active participation in the Eremitenpresse publishing house and returned to Berlin. In 1967, he founded the Neue Rabenpresse in the rooms of the gallery in the evening of Vera Ziegler . In addition to the titles mentioned under publisher publications, the first publication of the Neue Rabenpresse was an anthology edited by VO Stomps with texts by numerous authors from his previous publishers: Anthologie als Alibi , provided with woodcuts by Günter Bruno Fuchs , Johannes Vennekamp , Arno Waldschmidt , Ali Schindehütte and Uwe Bremer , artists who had also worked on earlier publications.

VO Stomps fell ill in 1969 and died on April 4, 1970. With that, the still young publishing house had lost its founder and mentor and could not continue to operate. The City of Mainz's Victor Otto Stomps Prize is a reminder of its importance for the development of small publishers .

Inspired by VO Stomps' Neue Rabenpresse , Vera Ziegler brought out a series of publications under the name Edition der Galerie am Abend from 1969 onwards.
