The New Synagogue in the Hungarian city of Szeged is the second largest synagogue in Hungary after the Great Synagogue in Budapest and the fourth largest active synagogue in the world.

The design of the New Synagogue goes back to the Jewish architect Lipót Baumhorn . The building was built between 1900 and 1903 and is one of the outstanding examples of the Fin de Siècle , which combines Art Nouveau and other historicist movements. The Art Nouveau interior is 48.5 meters high without a dome and shows clear influences of oriental architecture . There is space for 1340 believers.

The dome is supported by 24 pillars that symbolize all the hours of the day. The interior design of the dome represents the world, this painting and the glass paintings are by Miksa Róth . The flowers on a blue background symbolize faith. In the center of the dome is the radiant star of David . The design of the thorab canopy is an allusion to the Holy of Holies in the Solomonic Temple and was made of acacia wood from the banks of the Nile . There is an eternal light ( Ner Tamid ) above the canopy , which is powered by solar energy . The Torah shrine (Aron ha-Qodesch) on the eastern side of the main room is made of Jerusalem marble ; the descriptions and construction plans of the building were also kept here, but they were lost during the Holocaust . The six candelabra placed in front of the shrine are decorated with semi-precious stones and the two middle ones are gilded. The Torah shrine closes an apse behind it in the lower area towards the main room. The apse is designed as a Gothic ribbed vault, under the semi-dome above the Aron ha-Qodesch the choir and the organ are located. The pillars of the gallery are from Roman times. The organ has 2317 pipes and 42 registers with two manuals. It was built by Carl Leopold Wegenstein from Timișoara , the reconstruction (2000 - 01) was carried out by an organ building company from Pécs .

Rabbi Immanuel Löw was mainly responsible for the interior design , who helped to select the motifs of the altar, the ornaments and the windows.

The lead glass windows show the most important Jewish festivals , including the Saturday prayer .
