Neuroglobin is an oxygen-transporting protein , similar to hemoglobin , found in vertebrates . In humans, it is involved in the transport of oxygen in the brain. It is mainly expressed in the frontal lobe , subthalamic nucleus, and thalamus . It belongs to the globins .
The mouse-specific and human neuroglobin genes were characterized in 2000. In humans, the neuroglobin gene is on chromosome 14q21 . Neuroglobin is related to human globins, but has a peculiar gene structure. Sequence analyzes showed that it forms its own family of proteins and formed early in the evolution of multicellular animals (metazoa) - before the separation of the original mouths (protostomia) from the new mouths (deuterostomia).
