Cytoglobin is a member of the globin family . This also includes the muscle protein myoglobin , the blood protein hemoglobin , and the neuroglobin in the nervous system.

The cytoglobin , which was first described in 2002, occurs in almost all cells of vertebrates . It is believed to be used to transport and store oxygen in the cell , as well as to protect against oxidative stress . It even appears that cytoglobin has evolved into the muscle-specific variant myoglobin through gene duplication .

The cytoglobin gene was characterized in 2002 in humans, mice and zebrafish . The human cytoglobin gene is located on chromosome 17q25 . In humans and mice the protein is 190 amino acids (AA) in size, in zebrafish 174 AA. Cytoglobin is expressed in all tissues in humans and, according to sequence analyzes, has a common evolutionary precursor with myoglobin.
